Solutions Building:
A Community Collaborative

The Solutions Building Project is funded by the State Department of Developmental Disabilites with project oversight provided by the San Diego Regional Center. The project is cosponsored by both the San Diego Regional Center and San Diego County Mental Health Services. This is a Demonstration Project intended to examine specific strategies in cross systems collaboration for dually served adults for potential replication in other parts of the state. For more information about dual diagnosis in California see the State Wide Needs Assessment.

In 2006, Mosaic Connections, Inc. and San Diego Regional Center presented a summary of the statewide needs assessment and proposal for future work at the NADD's annual conference in San Diego, CA. (NADD Presentation) Mosaic Connections, Inc. has provided oversight to the project since January, 2007 and is pleased to announce that we will continue to facilitate project goals through Phase II of the project through April 30, 2011.

In August of 2007, the project presented an introduction and summary of progress to date at a state Mental Health Summit in Sacramento, CA. In November of 2007, the project provided an introduction and update at the Meeting of the Minds conference in San Diego. (View This Presentation).

The project's first phase provided key information in cross systems strategies and collaboration and will continue this work into Phase II. (Phase I Summary Report) The project uses experts from multiple systems to form a Specialty Assessment and Treatment (SAT) Team to provide cross systems collaboration. The SAT team provides consultation, training and a Cross Systems Plan that is distributed to key stakeholders and updated monthly to aid in services coordination across systems as well as crisis care coordination.

Comprehensive education and training was a key strategy in Phase I. For examples of some of the presentations developed by the project view: NADD Research Symposium; Solutions Building Workshop Presentation. The education and networking strategy of the project was enthusiastically received by all community stakeholders with requests for more comprehensive information in dual diagnosis. As a result, project staff have developed an outline of classes for a Certificate of Excellence. Project staff are busy developing curriculum for these classes which will be introduced to the community in August, 2009. Ideally, this Certificate of Excellence will be hosted by a local educational effort in the mental health system. For more information about this educational program, see http://mhsinc.org/programs/william_r_mead.asp.

An additional strategy is added to Phase II, using a monthly consultation clinic for individuals who experience a sudden worsening in mental health symptoms placing them at risk of losing support in the community. This Strategy will be reviewed at the end of Phase II to determine if this type of intervention earlier in a personal timeline can strengthen personal supports as well as cross systems supports to enhance personal coping strategies and maximize independence in community living.

The project participates in the MH/DS Statewide Collaborative for dually diagnosed individuals and provides quarterly status reports to this committee as well as the project’s local steering committee. Click here for a recent Status Report.

The project collects ongoing feedback and information from the community using the following Survey. Visitors are encouraged to take this survey to aid the project in it's objectives.
